Categories on Discourse DB are generally used for political topics and issues that are too broad to be made into a specific "topic" (see [[Help:Topics]] for more on those). A category can include other categories (which would thus be subcategories), topics, and individual items that haven't been sorted into a more specific topic. Examples of categories could include "Australian domestic policy", "Environmental issues", and "Military interventions".
