While Obamacare only compounded the problem of government intervention in health care, we were hardly in a free-market paradise before the law. Even prior to Obamacare’s enactment, the U.S. had the world’s third-highest level of per capita government health expenditures, according to statistics from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. In response to that challenge, Republican Sens. Richard Burr, Tom Coburn and Orrin Hatch unveiled a new health care reform proposal this past week that seeks to address many of the same problems targeted by Obamacare, but in a fashion much more congenial to those of us who believe that the health care system should be centered around patients rather than government.
