Even if it would have made sense otherwise, the price for staying demanded by the Iraqis was too high. The Iraqis refused to give U.S. troops immunity from prosecution for alleged crimes, a deal-breaker by any definition of that term. Indeed, that Iraqi leaders would make such a demand at this point borders on the outrageous. More than 4,400 American troops in Iraq have lost their lives. This country has spent more than a trillion dollars in the Iraqi adventure. After all this expenditure of blood and treasure, the United States should not have to beg anyone to stay.
